Perils of Socialising
A pitfall of many a good intention is a night out with friends or colleagues. Having fun is an essential part of life/work balance and an important form of stress relief. Just ensure you don’t socialise to excess
What happens when you want a night out? Will your good intentions come crashing down and your hopes of a younger, fitter and stronger body be dashed? Not necessarily.
Meeting with friends, family and work colleagues to socialise is an important part of life and one of the factors that keeps us young, helps prime our mental focus and helps us de-stress. However, we need to control the amount of socialising we do, especially when it involves the food and alcohol that can go hand in hand with social events. While you are on the programme, I suggest you keep nights, and lunches, out to a minimum. You have committed to this programme and need to be focused if you are to fully reap the benefits that come from it. Don’t be concerned that you will fall out of the loop or that friends and colleagues will see you differently. In my experience of working with clients who were very concerned about cutting down on social engagements, the opposite was true – they found that people were impressed that they were following a controlled 8-week programme and respected the changes they were trying to make. And the same will almost certainly be true for you. But if you do go out, stick to your guns and don’t veer away from your diet plan. All too often I hear clients tell me how they felt under pressure to drink alcohol when they went out, but actually, you will be amazed how many people are happy to go out to get some healthier food and drink less. Most of us just need someone else to lead us in the right direction. Also try socialising differently; rather than just going for drinks, go and play a sport and then have a drink. Work on balance in your life.
